Malware Removal
Malware is Malicious software, written to do “bad stuff”( destroy, modify or steal data) to your computer, without your permission, to modify your software or data, to steal data such as credit card information, login to banks and passwords, etc. They come with different names, and there is no one easy solution to prevent these problems. They are all an invasion of privacy. There is continuing efforts for legislators to write laws, but this offers little protection, but does provide some penalties, if the bad guys are caught.
Virus
Computer program or script, written to destroy, modify or steal data, and to move from file to file and/or
computer to computer. The damage intended may be merely to write messages, destroy, modify or steal data. They can even go so far as to “take over” your computer, and use it as a “zombie” as part of a botnet. This is the oldest group of malware, and probably the most dangerous.
Worm
Type of virus that propagates through a network. This is less of a threat to home computers and Small Businesses.
Trojan Horse
Similar to a virus, but is often a package of spies and viruses ( think of the original Trojan horse, with a group of soldiers). In some cases, you could remove all the spies and viruses, only to have them all return after you re-boot! This happens if you did not find the Trojan horse itself!
Spyware
Category of unwanted cookies and/or programs that track your habits and tailor advertising (pop-ups), or alter your browser settings (browser helper objects) so that you would go where they want you to go, as opposed to where you want to go. Some even send information back to their servers, such as shopping habits, or worse, credit card numbers, passwords, logins, etc.
Dozens of Windows tools are available to help identify and remove spyware, adware, and other malicious code from computers. However, the most powerful ones are not for the faint of heart. Some of my personal favorites—mostly because they're free—are , Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad Aware and AVG.. In addition, there are many commercial alternatives, including Spy Sweeper .
Note: Recently Micrsoft has come out with Microsoft Security Essentials that I'm using with my computers. Its free and very good!
As a computer servicer, I've run across a lot of infected computers. I can clean them in many cases, but in some cases, it is better to do a format reload because of the damage done by the viruses, etc. But, no matter what, we can make it all better!
